What Is The Day Of The Lord And How Is It Different From The Day Of Christ?

What Is The Day Of The Lord, And Is It Different From The Day Of Christ? Zeph. 1:15, 18, “That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness. 18 Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord's wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.”
2 Pet. 3:10-11, “But the Day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness.”
There are many other scriptures that describe the Day of the Lord; Isa. 2:12-21; Amos 5:18-20; Joel 1:15; 2:1-2, 10-11, 30-31, etc. No rational person (not even an atheist) would want to face going through such a terrible time. The Day of the Lord is a terrible time period for those who refused the atoning sacrifice of God’s only Son- Jesus.

Christians are not destined, nor do they go through the Day of the Lord. Rom. 5:9, “Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.” 1 Thes. 5:9-10, “For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.” Those who have accepted Jesus as Lord will be raptured before the Wrath. Those who don’t get raptured, will face the Day of the Lord.

The Day of Christ as described in 2 Thes. 2:2 (KJ ver.) is not the same event as the Day of the Lord! This needs to be understood. Some translations use Day of the Lord in this passage. The Greek uses the Day of the Christ; KJ translates as Day of Christ. Furthermore, the context of the passage also supports that this passage can’t be Day of the Lord, since the preceding verse is talking about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, & our gathering together to Him- which is obviously referring to the Rapture, & not to the Day of The Lord! However, immediately after we are raptured, the day of the Lord begins (further explanation to follow).

The Day of Christ is going to be a glorious day. We will meet the Lord when He comes in the clouds & gathers us, Matt. 24:30-31, “And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”

We will be raptured 1 Thes. 4:16-18, “16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” Christians are, “looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ,” Tit. 2:13. However, the preceding 2 verses Tit. 2:11-12 states, “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present world.”

When we are raptured, we get our new immortal bodies,1 Cor. 15:50-54, “ Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead (dead Christians) will be raised incorruptible, and we (Christians who are living) shall be changed.” 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be bought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.” As the song says, “What a day that will be when my Jesus I shall see, and I shall look upon His face, the one who saved me by His grace.”

The Christians who are alive at the Last Days, will see Jesus coming on the clouds of heaven with power & great glory, will be rejoicing. They will be raptured right after the dead in Christ rise first, then they will be caught up (raptured), together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air (see 1 Thes. 4:16-18)! The Rapture will be a glorious Day! However, not everyone who sees Jesus coming in the clouds will be rejoicing. Those who didn’t accept Jesus as Savior will be mourning, because they will then realize that Jesus will pour out His wrath on them. Matt. 24:30, “Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.” Christians are raptured at this time, but non-Christians get what they have sown, the Wrath.

The same event is described in Rev. 6:12-17, “I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. They the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place (this is the same event described in Matt 24:29). And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, and said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits of the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?” The Wrath is the 7th Seal in the Book of Revelation (the Book of Revelation is explained in a following book).
Like most other events, the Lord does not reveal to us the day or the hour of the Rapture. However, the Lord does reveal to us what events will occur before the Rapture, & those events before the Wrath. If Jesus didn’t want us to know, He wouldn’t have listed all sorts of events that would take place shortly before The Rapture & before of The Wrath. Therefore, we would be wise to heed what He says. Many of the following chapters describe these different events.
